How do you like them apples?

4 reason why apples are more than just delicious and nutritious.
1. Apples have the longest shelf life
Apples will last a week and a half or more after you buy them--up to 10 days longer than soft fruits like strawberries.
To make sure you buy the freshest produce, choose apples from the northern hemisphere in the fall and select southern hemisphere apples in the spring, says Mike Knowles, deputy editor of Eurofruit Magazine. "Never store apples and bananas in the same bowl," he says. "The apples end up ripening much quicker." Put your apples in the fridge when you bring them home to keep them fresher longer.
2. Apples help rein in cholesterol
Erlier this year, Cornell University researchers found that eating one Red Delicious apple a day can block LDL oxidation, resulting in an 8 percent drop levels. Bonus: Apples (and their skins) contain soluble fiber, the kind that scrubs artery walls clean. Cut one up and mix it into oatmeal, another top source.
3. Apples give you a boost on a long workout
Don't sweat the types of carbohydrates you consume on a long bike ride or run. A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research shows that you'll get an equal boost from foods whether they have a low glycemic load (like apples) or a high one (like crackers). Lead study author Conrad Earnest, Ph.D., says that drinking only water is sufficient for sessions under 90 minutes, but for longer periods, you should consume 25 to 40 grams of carbohydrates every 30 minutes to fuel your body.
4. Apples win on a peel
They might do if your only other snack options are a Slurpee and a bag of Cheetos, but peeled apples are not as healthful as the whole fruit. Canadian researchers recently discovered that 80 percent of an apple's antioxidants are found in the skin. (That's where you'll find the fiber, too.) The scientists also compared total antioxidant levels in eight different apples, and Red Delicious took top honors, with two times the polyphenol potency of such common types as Empire, McIntosh, and Mutsu.
